What happens when Earth science meets simulation at the edge of what's possible?
In this episode of The Simulation Century, UltiSim CEO Richard Boyd sits down with two of the most accomplished Earth and environmental scientists in the country to explore how AI, digital twins, and large-scale simulation are reshaping how we understand and protect our planet.
Dr. Christa Peters-Lidard | Former Director, Sciences and Exploration Directorate, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Dr. Peters-Lidard led development of NASA's Land Information System (LIS), co-winner of NASA's 2005 Software of the Year. In 20+ years at Goddard she rose from Chief of the Hydrological Sciences Lab to Director of the Sciences and Exploration Directorate (2023–2025), leading the world's largest collection of Earth and space scientists (490+ civil servants). NASA lead for the USAID Famine Early Warning Systems Network; originated the Earth Information System as Acting Goddard Chief Scientist. Fellow, AMS and AGU; 2026 Distinguished Visiting Scientist, Schmidt Sciences. B.S. Geophysics, Virginia Tech; Ph.D., Princeton.
Dr. Jeffrey Arnold | Chief Innovation Officer, Entarian Chief Innovation Officer at Entarian, leading the Innovation Foundry. Joined in 2024 from MITRE, where he was Chief Scientist for geoscience R&D in the Emerging Technologies Innovation Center. His 25-year federal career began in computational and experimental atmospheric chemistry at NOAA and USEPA labs, then a decade creating and leading the U.S. Army Engineer national research program turning field observations and continental-scale hydro-climatology models into engineering inputs for national water and energy security. Now focused on ML emulators and AI components that make massive Earth science and space weather datasets usable for decisions protecting U.S. public safety and prosperity. Ph.D. in tropospheric chemistry and physics, UNC Chapel Hill; 150+ peer-reviewed publications.

Richard talks to Patrick Scannell, author of The Disruption of Thought. We used to build first and learn the cost later. Planes before aerodynamics, hospitals before understanding the systems inside them, wars before knowing the outcome. That's over. AI and data-infused simulation is becoming the operating layer of civilization, the substrate beneath how we design, decide, and defend. The organizations and nations that learn to simulate before they act will outlast the ones that don't. We will not just understand the past more deeply, monitor complex systems in real time, and predict the future, but also design the future we want. This is the Simulation Century. pt 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cjD0glQOtzg&t=2s

In an April 8, 2026 post on LinkedIn, Richard challenges the AGI status quo, arguing that LLMs are "epistemic fossils." Discover his vision for Grounded Intelligence: a self-modifying architecture that finally connects AI to physical reality.
Cutting-edge technology meets affordable delivery to transform military systems engineering and operational insight.
GrepBeat last wrote about Ultisim in the fall of 2022. Ultisim is a Chapel Hill-based startup leveraging a team of experts in AI and simulation to create digital twins and learning simulations with applications across industries.
Design Thinking: Going from two dimensional applications to rich 3D applications with every medium ever used in human history has a host of design challenges. Designers who can think in these dimensions and focus on the user will be in high demand.
